8 Breakfast Food Items to Try this Navratri 2023



Panchami is the fifth day of Navratri celebrations. On this day, Devi Skandhmata is worshiped. As we seek the goddesses’ blessings, we also celebrate the time by consuming healthy, pure, and satvic vegetarian dishes throughout these nine days. 

Breakfast is an important part of our daily food cycle. In this article, we will list the breakfast delights that you can savor during Navratri 2023. It will also provide a diverse and fulfilling culinary experience during these festive days. 

Sabudana Khichdi

A classic Navratri favorite, Sabudana Khichdi is a delicious combination of tapioca pearls, peanuts, and spices. It's a must-try for those observing fasting during Navratri. All our breakfast suggestions are for home-made healthy dishes.

Sabudana Khichdi: Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Sabudana (Tapioca pearls)
  • 1/2 cup roasted and coarsely crushed peanuts
  • 2 boiled and mashed potatoes
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • A pinch of sendha namak (rock salt)
  • 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
  • Fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • Lemon juice to taste


  • Rinse the sabudana and soak it in water for 4-5 hours.
  • Drain any excess water and keep the sabudana aside.
  • Heat ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds and green chilies. Sauté for a minute.
  • Add the mashed potatoes, peanuts, and sendha namak. Stir well.
  • Add the soaked sabudana and cook until translucent.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and lemon juice.

Aloo Tikki

Crispy and flavorful, Aloo Tikki is made from mashed potatoes and spices, a versatile and popular snack choice during Navratri. Enjoy it with mint chutney for an extra burst of flavor. 

Aloo Tikki: Ingredients:

  • 4 boiled and mashed potatoes
  • 1/2 cup boiled green peas
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • A pinch of sendha namak
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • Oil for shallow frying


  • In a bowl, combine the mashed potatoes, boiled green peas, green chilies, cumin seeds, sendha namak, red chili powder, and garam masala.
  • Mix well and shape the mixture into small tikkis.
  • Heat a little bit of oil in a pan and shallow fry the tikkis until they are golden brown on both sides. 

    Vrat Wale Chawal Dhokla

    Vrat Wale Chawal Dhokla is a steamed Navratri breakfast delicacy made from rice flour, yogurt, and spices, offering a delightful twist to your morning meal.

    Vrat Wale Chawal Dhokla: Ingredients:

    • 1 cup rice flour
    • 1/2 cup yogurt
    • 1/4 cup water
    • 1/2 tsp sendha namak
    • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
    • 1/2 tsp green chili paste
    • 1/2 tsp grated ginger
    • 1/2 tsp Eno fruit salt
    • 1 tbsp oil


    • In a bowl, mix rice flour, yogurt, and water to make a smooth batter.
    • Add sendha namak, cumin seeds, green chili paste, and grated ginger. Mix well.
    • Grease a steaming pan or thali with oil and pour the batter into it.
    • Steam for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
    • Allow it to cool and cut into pieces. Heat oil in a pan and temper with cumin seeds.
    • Pour this tempering over the dhokla pieces.  

      Fruit Chaat

      A light and refreshing choice, Fruit Chaat blends various fruits with a sprinkle of rock salt and chaat masala. It's a delightful way to start your day, energizing you throughout Navratri. This chaat can also help in your weight loss journey.

      Fruit Chaat: Ingredients:

      • Assorted fruits (e.g., apples, bananas, oranges, pomegranate seeds)
      • Rock salt to taste
      • Chaat masala to taste
      • Fresh lemon juice


      • Wash and chop the fruits into bite-sized pieces.
      • Mix the fruits in a bowl, sprinkle with rock salt, and chaat masala to taste.
      • Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the fruit chaat.
      • Toss gently and serve. 

        Aloo Ke Parathe

        Aloo Ke Parathe, stuffed with spiced mashed potatoes, provides a comforting and traditional Navratri breakfast option.

        Aloo Ke Parathe: Ingredients:

        • 2 cups wheat flour
        • 2-3 boiled and mashed potatoes
        • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
        • 1/2 tsp sendha namak
        • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
        • Ghee or oil for cooking (In limited amounts)


        • In a mixing bowl, combine wheat flour, mashed potatoes, green chilies, sendha namak, and cumin seeds.
        • Knead the mixture into a soft dough using water.
        • Divide the dough into small portions and roll them into parathas.
        • Cook on a hot griddle with ghee or oil until they are golden and crisp. 

          Singhare Atte Ka Cheela

          These savory water chestnut flour pancakes are quick and easy to prepare, making them an excellent choice during Navratri. Top them with curd and sendha namak for an authentic Navratri taste

          Singhare Atte Ka Cheela: Ingredients:

          • 1 cup singhare ka atta (water chestnut flour)
          • 1/2 cup yogurt
          • 1-2 green chilies, finely chopped
          • A pinch of sendha namak
          • Water to make a batter
          • Ghee for cooking


          • In a bowl, combine singhare ka atta, yogurt, green chilies, and sendha namak.
          • Add water to make a smooth, pourable batter.
          • Heat ghee on a pan and pour a ladle of the batter to make a thin cheela.
          • Cook until both sides are golden brown. 

            Dahi Puri

            Dahi Puri is a tantalizing blend of hollow semolina balls filled with yogurt, tamarind chutney, and spices. This dish offers a fantastic combination of flavors and textures.

            Dahi Puri: Ingredients:

            • 12 puris
            • 1 cup boiled and mashed potatoes
            • 1/2 cup boiled chickpeas
            • 1/2 cup sweet chutney
            • 1/2 cup green chutney
            • 1 cup yogurt
            • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
            • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
            • 1/2 tsp chaat masala
            • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped


            • Carefully make a hole in each puri.
            • Fill the puris with mashed potatoes and chickpeas.
            • Top with yogurt, tamarind chutney, and green chutney.
            • Sprinkle red chili powder, cumin powder, and chaat masala.
            • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.  

              Sabzi Puri

              Sabzi Puri is a delightful addition to your Navratri breakfast menu, featuring crispy puris filled with spiced, aromatic vegetable curry. Enjoy the burst of flavors and textures in this traditional Indian dish. It is a staple breakfast item throughout India.

              Sabzi Puri: Ingredients: For Puri:

              • 1 cup singhare ka atta (water chestnut flour)
              • Sendha namak to taste
              • Water for kneading
              • Oil in controlled amounts

              For Filling:

              • 2-3 boiled and mashed potatoes
              • 1/2 cup boiled mixed vegetables (e.g., peas, carrots)
              • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
              • A pinch of sendha namak
              • Red chili powder to taste
              • Garam masala to taste

              Recipe: For Puri:

              • In a bowl, combine singhare ka atta, sendha namak, and water to make a stiff dough.
              • Divide the dough into small portions and roll them into puris.
              • Heat ghee in a deep pan and deep fry the puris until they puff up and turn golden brown.

              For Filling:

              • Heat ghee in a pan, add cumin seeds, and sauté.
              • Add the mashed potatoes, boiled mixed vegetables, sendha namak, red chili powder, and garam masala. Mix well.
